In 1212 King John signed a charter giving York’s citizens the freedom to govern themselves. York 800 celebrates the anniversary with a year-long programme of spectacular events!

Returning to the historic York Museum Gardens this August for a full-scale production for the first time in over two decades!

Performed by the people of York for centuries, the world famous Mystery Plays are back for a full scale production this August. The story of God, of man and woman and of the cosmic struggle between good and evil will be presented on an epic scale against the magnificent backdrop of St Mary’s Abbey in the York Museum Gardens.

York promises to hold a spectacular year of events for 2012.

With celebrations planned for throughout the year for York’s 800th Charter Year celebration for status as a City there will also be plenty to please everyone. In spring there will be a Chocolate Festival to herald the opening of the city’s latest attraction, a Chocolate Museum. The most elaborate production of the Mystery Plays will be staged in the summer. The National Railway Museum will be holding its largest every Railfest in June and also in June we shall be hosting the Olympic Tourch . Along side all these new events are the old favorites including the Jorvic Viking Festival, Race Meetings throughout the year and the St Nicolas Fayre to name a few.
